About the AI Watchdog Alliance

The AI Watchdog Alliance is a not-for-profit organization established to give ordinary people visibility into, and control over, the artificial intelligence operating in their lives.

Mission

To ensure that consumers can see what AI is doing on their devices and in their accounts, can stop it when they choose, and can obtain the tools to do so regardless of what they can pay. We pursue that mission three ways: public advisories written for ordinary readers, a maintained public record of developments and incidents, and a program that funds approved consumer protection tools for students, first responders, and their families.

What we are, and what we are not

We are

  • An independent not-for-profit organization
  • A publisher of consumer advisories and a public record
  • A publisher of open technical standards, beginning with the Verified Stop Standard, KS-1.0
  • A funder of approved consumer protection tools
  • Non-partisan, and not a recipient of government funds

We are not

  • A government agency, and we hold no regulatory authority
  • A certification body — our approval is a published opinion against a published standard
  • Affiliated with AI Watchdog (aiwatchdog.net) or any similarly named organization
  • Soliciting public contributions at this time

Supporters and independence

The Alliance's work is made possible by its supporters. We name them, and we name what they get: nothing but a public standard applied to everyone equally. Our founding supporter is Atom Works, Inc., maker of Abjurer™, which underwrites the free memberships we provide to students and first responders. Supporters have no editorial control over our advisories or the public record, our approval standard is published and applied equally to every product, and approvals are reviewed annually and can be withdrawn. The supporter statement and the commitments that accompany it are published with the program, and the full detail sits in our Disclaimers & Disclosures.

Formation status

The Alliance is incorporating as a nonprofit corporation in the State of Delaware and will apply to the Internal Revenue Service for recognition as a public charity under Section 501(c)(3). Until a determination letter issues we describe ourselves as a not-for-profit organization, we do not claim tax-exempt status, and contributions are not tax-deductible. We do not solicit charitable contributions until that process concludes. The organization is governed by a board of directors a majority of whom are independent of every supporter named on this site; that requirement is written into the bylaws and cannot be removed without a supermajority of the independent directors. Program benefits described on this site take effect at launch.
